Any time your garbage disposal is not working properly, it can affect your normal kitchen routine, and make cleaning much more difficult. Some of the normal signs that a garbage disposal may not be working properly is that you hear a noise such as humming from the disposal, but it is not working. Another sign can be that the disposal is draining slowly, or water could be leaking or filling the sink up, or maybe the disposal will not turn on at all.

Sometimes fixing your disposal may be as easy as pushing the reset button that is located on the bottom of the disposal. If the reset button does not work, it could be that food or another object is jammed in the disposal, it could be an electrical issue, or maybe a pipe is clogged or you have some seals that are faulty.

    SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:

Never put your hand in a garbage disposal, even if it is clogged with an object or debris. The best way to address the situation is to unplug or turn off the breaker so that there is no power to the unit, and then use a tool such as tongs or pliers to remove the object.

HOW TO FIX A GARBAGE DISPOSAL:

#1) Garbage Disposal Won't Turn On

*Push Reset Button- There is a built in breaker in the disposal that is designed to prevent damage, and if this is tripped, simply push the reset button on the bottom of the unit to restore power.

*Check For Power- It may be that the disposal is unplugged, or that a circuit breaker has blown. This can be due to a short or wiring issue in the unit. If the breaker is on, then it is also possible that a wire is loose, and needs to be tightened.

    #2) Garbage Disposal is Leaking

There are several places that leaks can occur on a garbage disposal, including the sink flange, the discharge hose, and the hose from disposal to the dishwasher.

*A Dishwasher Connection Leak- Check the hose and see if the connection needs to be tightened, or if possibly the hose needs to be replaced.

*Sink Flange Leak- Make sure the power is turned off. Loosen the mounting ring and remove the unit from under the sink; then apply new putty and tighten down the flange. Clean up any excess, install the disposal unit again, and then turn the power back on and check for leaks.

*A Discharge Drainpipe Leak- Check and make sure that the pipe that is bolted to the disposal is on correctly and is tightened properly. It may be necessary to replace the gasket if it appears to be old or damaged.

    #3) Garbage Disposal Draining Slowly

This issue may be the same problem as with any clogged drain, and may require taking apart drain traps or pipes to get to clogs. If no problem is found in these areas, then the clog is probably further into the line and may require a "snake' or auger to clear the obstruction.
